Blue-eyed Grass can be identified as a winter annual grassy weed, featuring zigzagging stems and flat, light-green leaves that are clustered at the base. Blue-eyed Grass produces a flower that vastly varies in color depending on the specific species of lawn weed. Several perennial grassy weed species that resemble Blue-eyed Grass also occur in turf grass.

Life Cycle

This lawn weed prefers moist soils and is often found growing on lawns, roadsides and pastures. Blue-eyed Grass thrives throughout the American Southeast. These grassy weeds are also winter annuals, meaning they overlap two calendar years but last only 12 months total. They germinate and develop from late summer to early fall, remain semidormant during the winter and then flower in spring. Come late spring or early summer, they mature and die off as the weather warms.

Control

Blue-eyed Grass can be difficult to remove from your lawn or landscaping, especially when relying solely on cultural control methods such as hand-pulling lawn weeds or proper watering and mowing routines. For effective weed removal, professionally selected and applied weed control treatments are your best bet for eradication.
