Golf courses prefer nutrient-rich, well-drained soils and use different, top-performing grass types depending on the area of the country. In the Northern United States, a cool season grass like Bentgrass performs best for greens and tee boxes, and it can be mowed short. Meanwhile, Kentucky bluegrass, Ryegrass and Tall Fescue are the best grass types for fairways and the rough. These grasses closely resemble home lawns and can be mowed at a higher height. In the Southern United States, Bermudagrass and Zoysia dominate the choices for tees and fairways. Both of these grass types can be mowed short for excellent playability.
